The 100 Points of ID System

When you apply for a rental property in Australia, landlords and agents often require you to provide 100 points of identification. This is a way to verify your identity and reduce the risk of fraud.

This is why we suggest doing certain things quickly when you arrive – some actions like getting your driving licence are the key to opening a lot more doors.

How it works:

Common Primary Documents (70 points each)

DocumentPointsNotes
Passport (current)70Most commonly used for migrants
Australian Birth Certificate70Only for Australian-born residents
Australian Citizenship Certificate70Proof of nationality

Secondary Documents (10–40 points each)

If you just arrived in Australia and don’t have a driver’s licence or utility bills yet, you might combine:

Total = 105 points

Tips for Using the 100 Points System

Combine documents — you can mix primary and secondary documents to reach 100 points.

Bring original documents — agents will usually want to see them, not just copies.

Photocopies for applications — you can provide copies with the originals at inspection.

Plan ahead — some documents take time to get (like a bank statement or rental reference).
